Sean Payton Reclaims Play-Calling Duties for Denver Broncos Offense

Colorado Springs Pueblo, CO, October 10, 2026 — The Denver Broncos have seen a significant change in their offensive leadership just four games into the season, as head coach Sean Payton has resumed play-calling responsibilities. This decision comes in response to ongoing struggles experienced by the team’s offense. Payton has reassigned the play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb back to himself.

This shift represents a notable alteration in the offensive strategy and personnel management for the Broncos. The move to reassert direct control over play-calling by the head coach underscores the team’s perceived need for immediate improvement and a different approach to offensive execution.

The team’s offensive performance has been a point of concern, prompting this strategic adjustment. Prior to Payton taking over play-calling, the offense had been under the direction of coordinator Davis Webb for the initial four games of the season. The exact nature of the offensive struggles has not been detailed beyond the general statement of their presence.

This recent development adds to a pattern of offensive inconsistency that has characterized the Denver Broncos franchise for several years. The period of instability is noted to have begun following the departure of former quarterback Peyton Manning in 2016. Since that time, the team has navigated various offensive schemes and personnel changes in an effort to regain consistent success.

The decision by Sean Payton to take back play-calling duties is a critical juncture for the Broncos as they aim to address their offensive challenges and improve their on-field performance under his leadership. The duration and impact of this change will be closely watched by analysts and fans alike.
