Toronto marketing and communications consultant shares why simple, consistent messaging can help growing businesses connect more effectively with their audiences.

Toronto, ON – September 30, 2026 – Gillian Rotstein, a Toronto-based marketing and communications consultant, is highlighting the importance of clear and consistent brand communication for small businesses and independent companies.

Rotstein works with entrepreneurs and growing brands on marketing strategy, content development, brand positioning, and digital communications. Through her consulting work, she has seen how easily small businesses can lose clarity when they try to communicate too many ideas at once.

“Business owners usually know their company extremely well, but customers are often seeing it for the first time,” said Rotstein. “The challenge is making sure someone can quickly understand who you are, what you do, and why it matters.”

Before moving into independent consulting in 2018, Rotstein spent several years working with larger marketing agencies. That experience gave her exposure to different industries, campaigns, and communication styles before she began working more directly with small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Rotstein believes effective marketing does not always require more content or more complicated campaigns. In many cases, the stronger approach is to simplify the message and make sure it remains consistent across websites, social media, digital content, and other customer touchpoints.

“Sometimes the best improvement is not adding something new,” she said. “It is removing the parts that distract from the main message and making the brand easier to understand.”

Her approach also draws from her broader creative interests, including photography, travel, interior design, food, and Toronto culture. Rotstein says these interests have made her more aware of how businesses use design, language, atmosphere, and small details to create memorable experiences.

She points to independent restaurants, cafés, shops, and local brands as examples of businesses that can create strong identities without large marketing budgets.

“People notice consistency,” Rotstein said. “A business can make a strong impression through thoughtful language, design, service, and attention to detail. Those things all contribute to how a brand is understood.”

As digital platforms continue to change, Rotstein believes the core principles of communication remain largely the same. Businesses still need to understand their audiences, communicate clearly, and make their identity easy to recognise.

“Tools and platforms will keep changing, but clear communication will always matter,” she said. “The goal is to make it easier for people to understand and connect with a business.”
